Welcome to the Alternative Water Program!
The Alternative Water Program (AWP) provides free nitrate testing for eligible residents who receive their drinking water from a private well or a Group B water system.
The program was originally launched in 2024 to select Benton-Franklin Health District (BFHD) programs and partner organizations. Due to its success, the program has expanded and is now available to eligible residents throughout Benton and Franklin counties.
If you receive your drinking water from a private well or a Group B water system, you may qualify for a free nitrate test. If elevated nitrate levels are detected, additional resources and assistance may be available to help protect your household's drinking water.

Already Tested Your Well?
If you have already tested your private well within Benton or Franklin County and your nitrate level is 10 mg/L or greater, you may qualify to receive a free Reverse Osmosis (RO) countertop unit through the Alternative Water Program.
To be considered, you must:
- Have a nitrate test result of 10 mg/L or greater from a private well or Group B water system in Benton or Franklin County.
- Meet the program's household eligibility requirements.
If you do not have a copy of your nitrate test results, our staff may be able to help locate them or discuss whether additional testing is needed.
