Our Commitment to Safer, Healthier Communities

Violence is preventable—and at Benton-Franklin Health District (BFHD), we approach it as a public health issue. Community violence impacts the physical, mental, and emotional health of individuals, families, and neighborhoods. Our work in Community Violence Intervention and Prevention (CVI) focuses on reducing harm, supporting those most affected, and building safer, more connected communities across Benton and Franklin Counties.

What is Community Violence Intervention (CVI)?

Community Violence Intervention (CVI) is a proven, community-centered approach that reduces violence by addressing its root causes and interrupting cycles of harm. CVI programs are built on trust, relationships, and collaboration—meeting people where they are and providing support before, during, and after moments of crisis.

CVI strategies often include:

  • Violence interruption and de-escalation
  • Trusted community outreach and mentorship
  • Trauma-informed care and healing support
  • Connections to education, employment, and services
  • Hospital-based or community-based intervention programs

BFHD’s Role

Benton-Franklin Health District serves as a backbone organization for regional CVI efforts. Our role includes:

1. Convening and Collaboration

Through the Community Safety Council, we bring together community-based organizations, healthcare providers, schools, law enforcement, and local leaders to align strategies and share resources.

2. Data and Public Health Expertise

We use local data and public health insights to:

  • Identify trends and priority populations. In the spring of 2026, our team worked with the Department of Commerce and the National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform (NICJR) to develop a Gun Violence Problem Analysis which summarizes firearm violence data from July 2023-July 2025.
  • Inform evidence-based strategies
  • Evaluate impact and improve programs over time

3. Funding and Capacity Building

BFHD supports community partners through:

4. Equity-Focused Approaches

We prioritize communities disproportionately affected by violence, ensuring that solutions are culturally responsive and community driven.
