Pink Eye or conjunctivitis can be caused by viruses, bacteria, and allergens. While it may be difficult to determine the exact cause of a case of pink eye the symptoms are generally the same. Pink or red color in the white of the eyes, increased tear production, itching, irritation, or burning, discharge, and crusting of the eyelids are all common symptoms. Pink eye spreads by having close personal contact with an infected person, or by touching an infected object and then touching your eyes. To prevent the spread of conjunctivitis, wash your hands often, avoid touching your eyes with unwashed hands, and avoiding contact with infected people is suggested. For bacterial conjunctivitis, antibiotics are normally prescribed as treatment. Viral conjunctivitis will normally clear on its own without the use of treatment. Allergy medications may be prescribed as a treatment for conjunctivitis caused by allergens.
